OPENING JUNE 11, 6-9pm-- Union Street Gallery is proud to announce its presentation of "The Past and the Promise" a solo introspective exhibit of black and white photography by local artist JOHN SPOMAR III, curated by Linda Lane Haynes. Exhibit runs June 11-July 31. Openings are June 11 and July 9, from 6-9pm Spomar's work is a personal study of dreams, fears, sins, joys, loves, emergence into manhood, and finally, peace. This body of work adresses John’s constant struggle between his strong family ties to the family business, and his passion for his art and his new found spirituality. This series has several chapters and a final view of John’s existence here on earth: Phase One: Dreams and Dreams; Phase Two: Strength and Relationships; Phase Three: This Is Me. This Is My Work; Phase Four: Freedom; Phase Five: The Promise. When asked why photogrophy, John responded, “Photography is the best medium that works for me. The Past and the Promise was all, but the last piece, created using film and silver gelatin photographic paper. Nothing was digitally enhanced except the last piece. There are two arts in photography the art of image making on film and the art of image making on paper. I love making photographs with any kind of camera, high end digital, pinhole cameras, 35mm, 120mm plastic or toy cameras, 4”x5” view cameras, even home made cameras made out of old suit cases. It’s the art of manipulating or not manipulating light or the subject.”
